THE NEED Murphys
Christian Camp is quickly outgrowing its ability to serve
the public demand. We regularly turn away groups because
our lodging and dining facilities cannot accommodate more
than about 50 individuals. The camp also lacks indoor
recreation facilities for use during inclement weather.
While we cherish our role as a servant to small churches
and groups which cannot afford to attend larger camps and
retreat centers, we believe we can continue to provide
for more of these groups with a slight expansion of our
facilities.
THE
SOLUTION
We
propose to convert the current meeting facility (conference
room) known as The Upper Room, on the second floor of the
Widegren Center Lodge, into additional housing rooms. We
envision this low-cost project could add as many as 24
beds, bringing the total to about 60 beds in the Widegren
Center Lodge. With our existing cabins, this would bring
the camp's total bed capacity to 76. This size would add
a new level of profitability to the camp operation.
With
a total guest capacity of 76, our current dining hall
would be inadequate, since it has a current fire-rating
maximum capacity of 50. Secondly, the conversion of the
present conference room to housing would require the
construction of new meeting facilities. We propose the
construction of a new multipurpose Dining Hall and
Conference Center to meet both of these needs. The
proposed new building would be a two-story log structure
with kitchen and dining areas on the first floor and a
large new chapel/conference room on the second floor. The
plan also envisions a new lounge (see photo top right)
and camp store on the first floor and two small-group
"break-out" meeting rooms on the second level.
